German police confirmed a report in tabloid Bild that the book, estimated to be worth EUR 68,000, had been stolen. It was probably taken from its display case on October 17 or 18.
The book also contained hand-written notes by Goethe's contemporaries in Weimar, Johann Gottfried Herder and Christoph Martin Wieland.
