Boulevard and Brezsnyev Gallery Holds Winter Auction

András Bartos: Bench

Judit Katalin Elek: 1 Day 1 Photo

The floor of the gallery, whose walls are bare brick, was covered with straw, suggesting a manger and lending to the Christmas feeling. Potential buyers wandered the gallery's high-ceilinged space, bumping into artists for lack of any place to sit.

Bori Rutkai: My Favourite Sweater, Old Warm Buddy

The auction lots were hung on the bare walls, one above the other, next to numbers which one could use to identify them in the catalogue. The offering was mixed. Bidding for a photograph of a decal-covered guitar by Zsolt Victora started at just one forint, but went under the hammer for HUF 7,000. A telephone bidder took two paintings by Bori Rutkai - I'm a Decorative Painting and My Favourite Sweater, Old Warm Buddy - almost immediately.

András Wahorn: Duck Woman

A painting by Zsuzsanna Kreif of a happy couple in which the woman holds an eggplant as if it were here little child demonstrates the humour and fantasy to be found in many of the works on offer. Another such work was András Wahorn's Duck Woman, for which bidding started at HUF 320,000.

In the end, relatively few of the lots found owners, but their inclusion in the catalogue was perhaps nearly as important as being bought.
