Budapest State Opera to host charity gala instead of annual ball

(MTI) - The decision was made in agreement by the Opera's ministerial commissioner Adam Horvath and management, Cultural State Secretary Geza Szocs and Culture Minister Miklos Rethelyi, the institution said in a statement.

The organisers cited the economic crisis and natural disasters the country has experienced as reasons for the event change.

"When Hungary is suffering the damaging effects of the economic crisis and various natural disasters the first thing needed is help," said the statement.

The Opera House will on March 5, the original date of the annual ball, organise a large-scale charity gala concert and invite guests to contribute donations.
