Budapest Summer Festival Promises Big Programme

The open-air stage on Margaret Island

Frank Wildhorn's musical The Red Pimpernel will premiere on Margaret Island on July 25. The musical is based on Emma Orczy's novel, set during the time of the French Revolution. Preparations are already underway with the participation of the Szigligeti Theatre of Szolnok. The musical will be directed by László Molnár, with Réka Koós and Attila Csengeri in the lead roles.

 
Charles Gounod's opera Romeo and Juliet will open on August 15, in a co-production with the Géza Gárdonyi Theatre of Eger. The director is Tibor Csizmadia and the conductor will be Máté Szabó Sipos. Julia will be played by Júlia Hajnóczy and Romeo by Szabolcs Brickner. Other important players in the production include Lajos Geiger, Gabriella Létay Kiss, Zsolt Haja and Géza Gábor
 
The Csokonai Theatre from Debrecen will bring its production of Puccini's Manon Lescaut to Budapest on August 7 and its production of Bánk Bán on August 19. The lead players for the productions have not yet been decided.
 
Vienna ballet soloist András Lukács has prepared the choreography for a performance entitled Letter to Martha Graham, to be staged in Városmajor Park. The Szigligeti Theatre of Szolnok will perform Lionel Bart's musical Oliver and the Kovátsműhely troupe will present Ruzante's renaissance comedy The Alluring Butterfly.
 
The Karinthy Theatre will bring two comedies to the programme: Marchel Achard's Domino and Anikó Vajda's rendering of Miklós László's Perfume Repository, entitled szerelem@könyv.hu (love@book.hu).
 
Pianist Csilla Szentpéteri will perform with the Hundred Member Gypsy Orchestra and flautist Eszter Horgas will pair up with pianist György Vukán on Margaret Island. Pat Metheny and his trio will also play on the island on July 4.
 
On weekends, renaissance fairs will take place on Margaret Island in the morning.
