The Budapest Operetta and Musical Theatre recently won the rights ? in a tight competition ? to perform Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice?s Beauty and the Beast in the German-speaking parts of Europe.

?The agreement is a big international acknowledgment of the?theatre and the production, and it means admittances into the mot elite international musical and theatre ?club?,? said György Lőrinczy, head of Pentaton Agency, the foreign agent for the theatre.

The production, directed by György Böhm, premiered at the theatre in Nagymező Street on March 18, 2005.

Chief director Miklós Gábor Kerényi said earlier that the theatre won the rights to perform the production in large part because of the costumes, which were designed in partnership with Herendi, one of Hungary?s most famous porcelain makers.

Kerényi said the theatre would perform at operetta galas in Munich and Nuremberg in December, in Oman in February and in Saint Petersburg in March. Performances of Princess Maritza in Baden-Baden and of The Csardas Princess in Tel Aviv are also on the programme, he added.
