The Unified Hungarian Jewish Congregation signed a lease for the synagogue, in Óbuda?s Lajos Street, with public broadcaster Magyar Televízió in the spring. Magyar Televízió earlier used the building as a studio.
The first synagogue at the site was built in 1767-69, based on plans by Máté Nepauer. The structure that stands there today was inaugurated in 1821, at a time when Jews could still not reside in the capital. Thus its place on the former edge of the city, in Lajos Street, earlier called Jew Street.
The Unified Hungarian Jewish Congregation renovated the synagogue with the help of donations in about five months. It will reopen on September 8 and become a functioning synagogue again.
Jona Metzger, Israel?s chief rabbi, will lead the consecration of the synagogue on September 5. The public is invited to the event which starts at 4:30pm.
