Wesseltoft took the stage in the capital's Millenáris with his laptop and a black concert grand. The 44-year-old pianist has had a rich, multifaceted career and has forged a revolution in style on the same scale as those started by George Russell or Ornette Coleman. Ten years ago, Wesseltoft published a brave new sound under the title New Conception of Jazz. The album went on to win a Grammy.
Wesseltoft, who was not in Hungary for the first time, showed again how he can dazzle with his technique. Perhaps he doesn't find as much excitement with a simple acoustic piano as before, for example in partnerships with John Scofield or Jan Garbarek. This time, he played mostly his own songs with a sampler and other electronic instruments. With these he created his own world of harmony and rhythm and pompous colour. He closed the performance with a rendering of Take Five that finished with a spectacular coda.
