Have you ever heard of the films Blowback and Public Enemy No.1? Probably not. How about the name of their director Mark L Lester? Don't be surprised if it doesn't ring a bell. According to IMDB, most of his films fail to reach 5.5 points on a rating scale of 1-10, and most are made for television. But you can find many of them available for the price of a coffee and a pastry at many shops in Budapest.
But you would be wrong to think this is the only kind of cheap DVD you can buy in Hungary.
For example, there are hundreds of interesting animated films available at low prices. If you are a lover of older animated films, then you will enjoy the laconic character of The Line by Italian cartoonist Osvaldo Cavandolli, Poland's popular Pampalini, or The Wonderful Adventures of Nils Holgersson, whose favourite pastime is riding wild geese. If you are open to new cartoons, you can also choose Charley and Mimmo, Lenny and Twiek or Flipper and Lopaka. And if you are prepared for a real taste of the genre, be sure not to miss the adventures of Tuterstein, the 3,000-year-old mummy come to life.
If you say cult films, I say Budapest Retro, Kontroll, Hukkle, Glass Tiger or Junk Movie. And if you are after art films, Director Werner Herzog's Fitzcarraldo, Kaspar Hauser or Nosferatu are all available at bafflingly low prices. And if you do not find Don't be a Menace, Artie, or Shaquille O'Neal in Kazaam funny enough, then maybe Charlie Chaplin or Laurel and Hardy will better suit your taste.
