?Children of Glory?, directed by Krisztina Goda and produced by Andy G. Vajna, is the first Hungarian film to have been invited for a screening at the residence of the US president.
The film follows the events in Budapest in October 1956 as well as the Hungarian water polo team?s legendary defeat of the Soviet team in the finals of the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, which took place at the same time.
Vajna, who moved to the United States at age 12, on the same day as the infamous match between Hungary and the USSR, said earlier that ?Children of Glory? uses an emotional approach, rather than a political one, to show the impact of the revolution on young people. "I would like this film and its message to reach young people so that they can feel proud of their country's history," Vajna said.
Before the White House screening, which will be attended by President George Bush, ?Children of Glory? will be screened by a selection committee for this year?s Gold Globe awards. The film will also be shown at a festival hosed by New York?s Lincoln Center.
Other cities around the world, including Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, London, Paris, Moscow and Tel Aviv, will also show the film to mark the anniversary of the revolution.
A number of big film distributors, including Fox, Sony Classics, Regency, Focus, Paramount Classics and the Weinstein Company have visited Budapest in recent weeks to see the pre-release version of the film. Talks on the film?s international distribution will start next week.
?Children of Glory? will debut in Hungary on Monday, October 23, the 50th anniversary of the start of the revolution.
