Following a meeting with Hungarian Speaker of Parliament Katalin Szili, who is currently in China, David Chow said that his goal was to erect a building suitable to represent European culture in Macau's Fisherman's Wharf, which already has some twenty copies.
The replicas include one of the Colosseum in Rome, as well as others of buildings in New Orleans, Amsterdam and Venice.
The businessman said construction would cost an estimated 200 million dollars and it could be completed in two or three years' time.
Unlike the other buildings, which are mostly casinos and restaurants, the Macau Opera will be a concert hall and cultural centre, Chow said, adding that his company had already obtained copies of the original designs from the Hungarian Culture Ministry.
The Budapest Opera - an elaborate neo-Renaissance building and a landmark of the city - was designed by architect Miklos Ybl and was completed in 1884.
