"This is a night of special literary and musical discourse," Minister of Education and Culture István Hiller told the nearly 400 people who came to see the event, entitled Hopes and Dreams. He added that the event aimed to introduce Hungarian culture to China's future intellectuals.
The audience heard readings of two short stories from Pál Békés's volume Stamp Collection, an excerpt from Zoltán Egressy's play Portugal, two short stories by György Spiró (Must Have Holidays and Big Santa), and the short story I Love Dancing and the poem The Mouse by Krisztina Tóth.
The Hungarian Cultural Season in China - dubbed "Freedom, love", a line borrowed from a poem by the Hungarian poet Sándor Petőfi - will present Hungary's economy, culture and tourism industry to the Chinese at a series of events lasting until the spring of next year.
The Hungarian Cultural Season will focus on four cities in China: Beijing and Shanghai in 2007, and Hong Kong and Shenzen in 2008.
