(MTI) - Pecs2010 events attracted a total of 900,000 registered visitors and the number of guest nights increased significantly compared to the previous year, Zsolt Pava said. Some 30 percent of visitors arrived from abroad last year as against 20 percent a year earlier, he added.

Pecs2010 director Csaba Ruzsa said earlier that tourism increase was on average 12 percent in European capitals of culture. Pecs expected 16-18 percent but they were surprised to see that the number of guest nights grew by 23-24 percent last year, he added.

Some 36 billion forints (EUR 133.3m) was spent on developments in the city, including on building a new library and knowledge centre, a concert hall, and a new cultural quarter.
