"The objective of the Art Network Agency (ANA) programme is to stimulate cultural exchange between Hungary and the United Kingdom, focusing on the field of contemporary art," the agency says.
Taking a flexible nomadic position instead of occupying a fixed gallery space, ANA will appear in multiple locations and contexts through a wide range of collaborative projects and events with different London-based institutions and galleries, says curator and ANA founder Eszter Steierhoffer. Engineering and developing a fundamental network, these partnerships will be significant in stimulating direct dialogue and long-term collaborations that respond to specific artistic approaches.
ANA has opened a growing public archive comprised of up-to-date portfolios by contemporary Hungarian artists, and a collection of publications and recent exhibition catalogues. ANA also provides free consultancy for curators and researchers.
In order to complement its consultancy services, ANA is currently working towards the establishment of a fund to provide financial support for exhibitions and programs in London-based institutions and galleries that present the work of Hungarian artists. The fund will be launched in winter 2010 and grants will be available through an open application process.
ANA's first event was a roundtable discussion at Whitechapel Gallery, followed by the launch of the book "We Are Not Ducks on a Pond but Ships at the Sea" Independent Art Initiatives, Budapest 1989-2009 published by IMPEX with an introduction by curator Rita Kálmán.
