Contemporary Art on Show in Shopping Centre

English

The exhibition, which opened in December 16, features a single work by Kicsiny that was earlier part of the Little Hungarian Pornography show at the MODEM in Debrecen. The huge grey box has been given an unusual place in Budapest, near the stairway of the first floor of the MOM Park shopping centre.

This, in itself, is something to think about - and something praiseworthy - that the fine arts could be popularized in any form in a shopping centre. It is also clear why Kicsiny's work wants to and can work among such a public. Anyway, space and the aspect of placement have always had a special role in the works of the artist. In this light, his work is capable of activating entirely new dimensions.

Kicsiny has brought to MOM Park a large-scale box into which one can peer through a window to see a room without a door painted black and white like a chess board. A faceless figure covered in the same checkered pattern lies on the floor of the room, brushes in hand. Next to the figure are two overturned buckets labeled "black" and "white". A step ladder tilts precariously against one room of the wall, telling a story.

The grotesque piece, which appears like a meteor from outer space on the first floor of the shopping centre, can be seen until the end of May.
