Culture official discusses EU presidency priorities in Brussels

English

 Geza Szocs

Geza Szocs held talks with Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, and Fadila Laanan, minister in charge of audiovisual culture for the French speaking community in Belgium, the statement said.

Szocs told Vassiliou that Hungary considers it especially important to include in the EU presidency priorities the contribution of culture to the Europa 2020 strategy. Vassiliou said that feedback from culture ministers in other countries showed that they agree with this initiative, the ministry said.

"Many consider the European Union simply an economic area, but beyond that, it is a spiritual one, created by culture and the arts," Szocs said.

Laanan promised that excellent current cooperation between Belgium and Hungary will continue after Hungary takes over the EU presidency. Szocs said Hungary would take over and continue the initiatives launched by the Belgian presidency.

Szocs will address a meeting of European Union ministers in charge of culture and audiovisual policy on Thursday and Friday.
