English

?In today?s world we need a reliable economic ally, and at the same time ? especially in this age of globalisation - links with such an old and traditional culture as China?s,? said Szőcs at the opening ceremony.

The event was also addressed by rector of the university Gyula Patkó, trade attache at the Chinese embassy in Budapest Wang Hongliang, managing director of the Wanhua group Jiansheng Ding and director of the Eötvös Loránd Univeristy?s Confucius Institute and Far East Institute Imre Hamar.

Patkó acknowledged Szőcs?s role in establishing the centre.

The centre will offer language courses and training in social sciences. It will organise teacher and research exchange schemes to contribute to the expansion of Chinese-Hungarian links in science and education.

Students interested in Chinese language and culture, as well as employees of Chinese-owned companies will be welcomed at the centre.

Wanhua-BorsodChem is a Chinese-owned company based in Kazincbarcika. Interest in China and the Chinese language has increased in northeast Hungary after Wanhua gained control of BorsodChem in February 2011 and many Chinese employees arrived in the region.

Chinese language courses organised by the University of Miskolc and the local Zrinyi secondary school are currently attended by some 170 students.
