The crime novel, which was published in Denmark in 2005, is about a rapist and murderer who gains the confidence of victims online, an all too common phenomenon today, Blaedel said.

"Rape that follows an acquaintance made online is unfortunately so wide spread there is even a name for it: cyber-raped."

Blaedel said she did much research for the book, speaking with police, who gave her an inside look at the way they handle such crimes, as well as pathologists, who described how they determine the cause of death, and psychiatrists, who told her how they profile criminals.

"So many acquaintances are made online today, perhaps because of fear, or because of the lack of free time, or maybe simply because of laziness. In any case, this comes with...a great deal of risk: A person sitting in front of a computer can tell anything about himself, and many who decide to get to know people in this way want to believe what the other person is saying, and for that reason really do believe it," Blaedel said.
