Debrecen Flower Carnival Celebrates 40 Years

English

The festival will take place in Debrecen, in the east of Hungary, on August 15?21. The festival?s highlight, a parade with sixteen flower-covered floats and twenty groups of performers from Hungary and other countries around the world, will take place on August 20.

For only the second time, visitors this year will be able to help decorate one of the floats. The best of floats will be selected by a jury for a cash prize.

A different musical act will play each day during the festival ? selections from operas and operettas will be performed on the 15th; the Old Boys, Hungary?s favorite nostalgia act, will play on the 16th; the Hundred Piece Gypsy Orchestra will play on the 17th; pop sensation Back II Black will take the stage on the 18th; Hot Chocolate will play on the 19th; and the final concert on the 20th will feature Abrakadabra and Charlie.

There will be an open air ball and fireworks on the 20th, Hungary?s national holiday.

Visitors to the festival will also be able to enjoy a show of András Máthé's photographs of flower carnivals past and an exhibition of works by silk artist Beáta Pintér at the Kölcsey Centre, Hungary?s second-largest cultural centre

Although the Debrecen Flower Carnival celebrates its 40th consecutive year in 2006, the festival was first organised a century ago.
