Dig for Dobó Stopped For Lack Of Money

English

The excavation, led by Hungarian businessman László Lakatos, was taking place at a church in Ruská, in present-day Slovakia, before the local heritage authorities withdrew their support for the project citing the ?amateur? fashion in which the search was being carried out.

Lakatos told the local internet news site Fenet-Felvidék that the authorities had threatened to impose a SKK 100,000 fine if work at the site continued. He added that workers had uncovered children?s bones and pieces of jewellery before work was halted. Excavators discovered four pieces of gold jewellery dating form the 15th or 16th century, two stamps marked 1 GBIHI, and a child?s gold ring with an inlay of precious stones. Lakatos said the discoveries seem to show the diggers are on the right track, and that Dobó?s remains might soon be found.

Because the project has become too big to rely solely on volunteer labour, Lakatos and his team have set up a not-for-profit organisation to continue their endeavour.

The siege of Eger and Dobó?s courage were celebrated in Géza Gárdnoyi?s classic novel Eclipse of the Crescent Moon.
