Eger Castle Gets State Money for Emergency Repairs

The money will be used to make repairs to areas of the castle which have been closed to visitors because they pose a threat to safety.

The local government of Heves County, where the castle is located, requested the funding already in spring, after heavy snow and rainfall damaged parts of the castle.

The HUF 10 million covers only about one-third of the total cost of the necessary repairs, but it will be used to complete the most urgent tasks, Pétercsák said. These include replacing tiles on the Hypolit Gate and making repairs to the southwest wall of the castle. Both areas are currently closed to visitors.

Pétercsák said it is hoped that, in future, EU funding can be used to rebuild the eastern wing of the gothic Bishop?s Palace inside the castle, as well as the officer?s quarters and the castle cellar. Completing the projects would draw visitors to the castle for a full day, rather than only a half day, he said.

The castle museum attracts some 500,000 visitors each year.
