The Chamber Theatre Festival was organised for the first time in 1986 in order to provide a forum for chamber theatre and experimental theatre in Hungary. In 1988, the programme was expanded to include alternative performances outside of the traditional theatre. After the change of system in Hungary, the festival was opened to theatres based in ethnic Hungarian regions outside of Hungary.

Festival director Katalin Kapuszta said that, after twenty years, the event had remained the only festival devoted to Hungarian chamber theatre. It serves as a protector as well as a nurturer of cultural values, providing a stage for talented young actors starting out their careers, she said.
