EP cultural committee talks on Hungary's EU presidency

English

This was the first meeting in a series of various EP committee visits to precede Hungary's EU presidency in the first half of 2011.

Head of Hungary's culture and press committee Laszlo L Simon, of the governing Fidesz party, said it was especially important for Hungary to show during its six-month presidency the diversity of culture and traditions that characterise the country.

It will be also important during the Hungarian presidency to pay special attention to minority policy, Simon said. The EU must pay due attention to ethnic Hungarians living beyond the borders, and the way they can maintain their national identity and culture, he added.

The meeting was also attended by Reformed Bishop Laszlo Tokes, vice-president of the EP, who said that increased attention had been paid lately on fostering cooperation between national parliaments and the EP.
