(MTI) - The free event is expected to attract thousands of people with pop, rock, jazz and folk concerts as well as film screenings about venues of the EU presidency outside Budapest.

No public dignitaries or politicians have been invited to the party but Government Spokeswoman Anna Nagy and the Hungarian EU presidency's spokeswoman Piroska Bakos will be in attendance.

During its presidency, Hungary will organise a variety of cultural fringe events, including concerts, exhibitions and conferences, Gergely Boszormenyi Nagy of the Ministry of Justice and Public Administration said earlier.

Most of the cultural events will be held in Budapest. Over 100 cultural programmes will be organised abroad. The programmes in Brussels, Vienna, Paris, London, Berlin, Rome and Barcelona will last for several days and will be attended by high-ranking state officials from Hungary as well, he said.

Further cultural events of the presidency will be held in Zagreb, Ljubljana, Gent, Cannes, Madrid, Torino, Tallinn, Riga and Poznan, he said.

Hungary will formally take over the post on January 6, to be followed by a joint session of the European Commission and the Hungarian government on January 7.
