(MTI) - Many renowned performers from the 27 EU member states will be featured at the festival between June 28 and July 2, including an ethno-folk rock band headed by Serbian film director Emir Kusturica and British electronica band Asian Dub Foundation.
The ministry and festival organisers have invited nearly a thousand youngsters from all over the EU to stay at the Europe Campsite to be set up on the festival grounds. The international visitors will be shown around the area by local students and they will get a chance to see such features as the former Iron Curtain border defence system and the site of the Pan-European picnic, a peace demonstration held near Sopron on the Hungarian-Austrian border on 19 August 1989, an event seen as leading to German reunification and the eastern enlargement of the European Union.
"One of the most important festivals in the country is an excellent place to give youngsters an overview of Hungary's six-month presidency," deputy Prime Minister Tibor Navracsics said in a statement.
The development of a cross-European Roma strategy is one of the special aims of the Hungarian EU presidency and the farewell party will therefore include an event called European Gipsy Rocks! on June 29. The international lineup will include Mahala Rai Banda from Spain, Jo'Lo from France, the Austrian-Hungarian-Czech collective Deladap and the Italian group Figli di Madre.
The festival grounds will also include a site named Europe Kitchen which will demonstrate the unique gastronomy of each EU member country.
An exhibition entitled Volt Hungaricum Top 10 will present regions, books, dishes, drinks and objects that Hungarian youngsters feel best represent their country. An online vote on the items to be featured is held at www.volt.hu/hungarikum.
This year's Volt festival will also feature concerts by American singer Moby, American rock bands My Chemical Romance, 30 Seconds to Mars, Monster Magnet and Primus, Canadian rock band Sum 41, British indie pop duo The Ting Tings, Australian performer Dub FX, Australian-British drum and bass and electronic rock band Pendulum, German electronic musician Paul Kalkbrenner and Irish-American hip hop group House of Pain.
