The photographs by Zsuzsanna Spilák offer an intimate look at the life of Erzsébet Lakatos, who was an inmate at a prison for mothers with newborns in Kecskemét. Lakatos, a Roma, was one of about 20 inmates who give birth in Hungarian prisons each year. The mothers are allowed to stay with their children for up to a year in Kecskemét before they are put into foster care.
Lakatos was released from prison in September 2007.
The exhibition will be opened by the former chairman of the Hungarian Helsinki Committee. Roma students of the Tóth Aladár Music School will perform together with the Soharóza choir.
The exhibition, accompanied by a documentary of Lakatos's life before and after her time in prison, will run until November 8.
