Few Hungarian Films Deal With Gypsy Themes

 Diána Groó: Vespa

The film director Mari Sós and the media expert and editor Éva Kalla recalled that a similar talk on Gypsy films had taken place at last year's Film Week, and the discussion became the seed for the first European Hungarian Gypsy Film Festival, held in Budapest in December. The festival included all types of Gypsy-themed films, from documentaries to animated films.

Kalls said the compilation of a catalogue of all Hungarian Gypsy-themed films was progressing well and is expected to be published in September.

 Orsi Nagypál: Cold Shower

The organisers of the roundtable talk noted that of the films at the 2010 Film Week, both in an outside the competition, 17 dealt with Gypsy themes. Among them were the feature Vespa and the short Eldorado, both by director Diána Groó, and Orsi Nagypál's Cold Shower.

Kalla said many filmmakers strived to create a feeling of compassion for the Roma in their work. "Thank you, but we don't want any of that," she added.

Answering questions from the audience, the talk's organisers said there is "no recipe" for a good Gypsy film, rather it has to be more natural for a Roma actor to play a role.
