Finnish Playwright to Direct Own Play in Hungary

English

?Ice Images?, which Smeds wrote when he was just 25, won the Prix Europa for the best radio play 1998. In it, Smeds creates a sharp portrait of the love-hate relationship between family members. If Freud had been born a poet, he probably would have written the same piece.

Smeds studied to become a playwright at the Finnish Theatre Academy between 1990 and 1995. There he worked closely with those studying to become actors, allowing him to practice writing not just plays, but theatre productions. Even today, Smeds says he prefers to think of himself as a playwright, rather than a director. ?Directing only serves the purpose of allowing me to express my writing,? he says.

As in the original production, music will play a defining role in the Krétakör?s rendering of ?Ice Images?. At the performance of the play, visitors may purchases an 80-page booklet on contemporary Finnish theatre which includes the text of the play for just EUR 1.

?Ice Images? will be performed at the Merlin Theatre in Budapest at 20:00 on November 9. A talk with the writer and director will follow the performance.
