Achache, who is known for directing music videos and commercials in the 80s, brought his new feature "A Night at the Club", an adaptation of a novel in which jazz features strongly, to the Titanic.
The film was shot in the seaside town of Brest, which does not have a reputation for being a beautiful city, a reputation with which Achache disagreed. The sea in the film represents the edge of a continent and provides the impetus for the hero of the story to make a choice, he added.
Achache said he made big changes to the story when adapting the novel for the screen but kept the kernel: a story about a man who revisits what has driven him to ruin and finds that it is exactly what gives him life.
"A Night at the Club" is about Simon Nardis, a once renowned jazz pianist who has chosen to lead a calmer life as a husband and father. Nardis faces his demons again when he makes a chance visit to a jazz club one evening.
