Florence Labruyere praised the design of the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, which was the work of the US acoustics engineer Russell Johnson, who recently died. Among Johnson's other credits are a civic centre in Philadelphia and the renovation of the Salle Pleyel in Paris.
National Philharmonic conductor Zoltán Kocsis said Budapest's Liszt Music Academy had earlier provided a fine venue, but was too small for performances of works by Mahler and Shostakovich.
A regular visitor to the concert hall praised the silence of the hall, noting that the Palace of Arts is built next to one of Hungary's busiest bridges.
