"An everyday ritual has been placed on a high throne," said Denmark's ambassador to Hungary Mads Sandau-Jensen at the opening of the exhibition, called Dream Seats.
The exhibition features the work of designers who were invited by Danish toilet seat company Pressalit to create the object of their dreams - a toilet seat, of course, though there were no practical limits to their fantasies and no pressure to meet production requirements.
The aesthete András Réz noted at the exhibition opening that, even we, in the 21st century, are accustomed to blood and violence on our television screens, but "evacuation" and other bodily functions are still tabu. Evacuation has a serious significance in the history of art, he added, citing the film The Big Lebowski and the left-up toilet seat as a symbol for the single man.
"The toilet is the ultimate place of intimacy, the last place that one feels safely ensconced," said Réz.
