Duke formed his own trio already at age 20, but his performance at the 1969 Newport Jazz Festival brought him to the attention of a wider audience. He went on to play with Jean-Luc Ponty and Frank Zappa's band The Mothers of Invention, with whom he performed in Hungary in the 1970s.
Duke's other collaborators include Dee Dee Bridgewater, Miles Davis, Barry Manilow, Smokey Robinson, The Pointer Sisters, Al Jarreau, Natalie Cole and Dionne Warwick.
Duke is also well known for his work as a producer and a composer.
