The Berlin paper Der Tagesspiegel published a long piece on the city and its role as a 2010 European Capital of Culture in early January, and several other papers, among them the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the Berliner Zeitung, want to send reporters to the city, according to the Berlin office of the Hungarian tourism agency.
"What makes Pécs so special is not only its Mediterranean climate, which allows figs to ripen in front of the mosque on the main square, it is not only the monuments from 2000 years of history, about all, it is the city's multicultural past. Over the centuries, countless peoples have lived here in the smallest space. Boundary changes, most recently in the 20th century, changed national identities, eliminated linguistic boundaries and made people of different ethnic backgrounds neighbours," Der Tagesspiegel said. "The mental expansion of the map of Europe would be a first step to a better understanding for the entire region."
One of the main points in Pécs's application to take the 2010 title was its role as a bridge between cultures in the region.
