The institute, a non-profit organisation which promotes German language and culture outside of German-speaking countries, moved from its old home in the more upscale Andrássy út in March.

?The move has increased the number of our visitors rather than reducing it. The library has attracted nearly 9,000 visitors, and the 80-plus events organised by the institute have also drawn thousands of people,? Goethe Institute director Gabriele Gauler said.

The number of visitors is up 10 percent over last year, Gauler said, adding that the institute is targeting more and more young people.

District IX mayor Ferenc Gegesy said the district had "gained much" from the move.

In 2007, the Goethe Institute again plans to offer a rich programme to everybody interested in German culture and language. Events planned include a number of exhibitions and international book and film festival.

The institute will also offer special scholarships for German language teachers and additional services for Hungary?s ethnic German minority, deputy-director Helmut Hofmann said.
