?The walls of the temple have shown they have the capacity to accommodate not only prayer and study but also culture,? Minister of Education and Culture István Hiller said at the reopening ceremony, quoting from the Talmud.
The Jewish and Hungarian cultures are interlinked in a thousand ways, and Hungarian culture would not be the same without Jewish artists and scientists, Hiller said.
Hungary?s retired chief rabbi József Schweitzer said he was pleased with the new function of the refurbished building, adding that it would serve the memory of the 5,000 Jews taken from Győr during the Holocaust.
Schweitzer, together with the chief rabbi of Vienna, said a Kaddish and blessed the building at the close of the ceremony.
The central budget covered HUF 450 million of the cost of refurbishing the building, which will house the Vasilescu collection among other works of art.
