György Pauk Returns to Szombathely for Master Class

English

?I have been a returning guest in Szombathely for several years. My primary aim has been to more thoroughly and deeply introduce young Hungarian talent to Bartók?s oevre,? Pauk said.

Pauk conceded that not one of the eight students to participate in the course in Szombathely were Hungarian. But he said he held master classes in London, the Netherlands, Sweden and other countries, wherever his students follow.

?Wherever I go, I also teach the basics of the once famous Hungarian school of violin playing because I try to keep it alive. Just the other day, here in London once of my Chinese students played a Bartók violin-piano sonata with a Japanese pianist and they had such a moving interpretation and great feel for the essence of this music that I could cry. It?s a shame that there is no interest in Hungary for this and so I have already told the organisers that I will consider whether I should return or not next year,? he added.

Pauk, a professor at the Royal Music Academy in London, was introduced to the Queen last week. He was one of 800 musicians who participated at events marking Her Majesty?s diamond jubilee.

?The pick of British artistic life was there in the Royal Academy of Arts building, including such personalities as Paul McCartney, Kiri Te Kanawa, Antonia Fraser, Derek Jakobi and Judi Dench. I am no snob but I was proud that I could be there as a Hungarian musician among these greats to greet Elisabeth II,? he said.
