KÖH has offered the public an outline of its work during the year every year since 2003. In 2009, which marked the thousandth anniversary of the founding of the dioceses of Pécs and Gyulafehérvár, a special emphasis was placed on sacral sites.
"By inventorying these achievements, we can see that heritage protection is carried out in the face of all difficulties...even in spite of a decrease in direct state participation," KÖH president Tamás Mezős said at the opening of the exhibition in the office's headquarters in the Buda castle.
President László Sólyom said it was a fundamental element of national identity to maintain "our common heritage received undivided". The contribution of civil society and local authorities is immeasurable when it comes to preserving and presenting cultural heritage, he added, citing the examples of the chapels of Bezeréd, Biatorbágy and Doberdó.
KÖH department head Péter Deme announced the launch of a project to offer electronic services by the office. With the help of HUF 200 million in European Union funding, the office will modernise its IT systems and improve the efficiency of internal and external administration.
The exhibition is open at the KÖH Heritage Gallery from Monday to Friday through February 20, 2010. A photo exhibition presenting winners of a heritage protection competition is on display in the building's Basement Gallery.
