Ferenc Csák, 32, is former undersecretary in charge of European affairs and development at the Prime Minister?s Office. He studied economics and political science, including a stint at the University of Regensburg, and he speaks German, English and French.

Csák?s appointment will become effective August 1.

Minister of Education and Culture István Hiller praised Csák?s skills as a coordinator, saying he would be responsible for maintaining contacts between the central government and the local government of Pécs, as well as between the cities of Essen and Istanbul, which will share the European Capital of Culture title with Pécs.

Hiller noted that the success of programmes connected to Pécs?s title would require an intensified effort by both the local government of Pécs and the central government.

?What is at stake in the European Capital of Culture project is an exceptional opportunity for exceptional success,? he said, adding that he would do everything in his power to ensure preparations moved forward as planned, personally assessing progress every three months.

Hiller said he would visit Essen later in the year to discuss preparations for 2010 there.

Parliamentary Speaker Katalin Szili, also speaking at the press conference to announce Csák?s appointment, said she would endeavour to strengthen cooperation between civil organisations involved in preparations for Pécs?s European Capital of Culture title.
