Joseph Saddler, a.k.a. Grandmaster Flash, was born in 1958 into a family who migrated to the United States from Barbados. He grew up in The Bronx, where he started performing at age 16.
Saddler used unprecedented techniques during DJ sets, such as playing the same music from two records, changing the speed of records and spinning records backwards.
He established Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five in 1978. The act?s debut 1982 recording Message made an indelible mark on the hip-hop world and opened a new chapter in pop music.
The band broke up but reformed in the 1990s to tour with Kurtis Blow and Run DMC.
Grandmaster Flash released a new album this spring featuring such stars as Busta Rhymes and Snoop Dogg.
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were the first hip-hop artists to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Grandmaster Flash first performed in Hungary in the spring of 2009, playing a two-hour set on the A38. Last year, he was part of the Fridge Festival lineup.
