Hungarian Cellist Wins Prize in Geneva

English

István Várdai

In addition to the main prize, which comes with a CHF 20,000 purse, Várdai took the Coup de Coeur Breguet prize, the Pierre Fournier prize and the audience prize at the competition.

Várdai, who was the only Hungarian at the competition, played Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo theme Op. 33, accompanied by Balázs Füjei on piano, for the finals on Monday evening. The pair was recognised with prizes at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow last year.

Várdai was up against the Russian Alexandr Buzlov and the German Peter-Philipp Staemmler in the finals. A special concert by the award winners will be held in the spring of 2009.

Várdai will play in nearly all of Hungary's major cities this concert season. He will debut in New York in January, tour China for two weeks in March and perform in France in May.
