Hungarian composer guest of honour at French festival

English

 Peter Eotvos

The Aspects des Musiques d'Aujourd'hui (Aspects of Today's Music) festival will be held for the 27th time. Over the past few years, it focussed on the lifework of a single contemporary composer.

This year's choice, Peter Eotvos, will meet festival-goers not only as a composer but also as a conductor and a music teacher. He will hold master's courses and attend the performance of his works in the local conservatoire.

On Saturday and Sunday Eotvos's works will be played along with 20th-century Hungarian composers like Bela Bartok, Zoltan Kodaly, Ferenc Farkas, Gyorgy Ligeti and Gyorgy Kurtag.

In a separate concert, Eotvos will pay tribute to German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, his one-time master who was most famous for his ground-breaking work in electronic music.

Peter Eotvos, 65, is regarded one of the best-known interpreters of 20th century music. Born in Transylvania's Odorheiu Secuiesc he was admitted  to the Budapest Academy of Music by Zoltan Kodaly at the age of 14. He later studied conducting in Cologne, where he played regularly in the Stockhausen Ensemble between 1968 and 1976. In 1979, he replaced Pierre Boulez as the Musical Director and conductor of the Paris Ensemble InterContemporain, a post he held until 1991. He made his debut in London in 1980, where he was Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1985-1988.

Eotvos has composed some 35 pieces including operas, concertos and compositions for string quartet, piano, cello and percussion.
