Gömböc |
The two-day event, dedicated to the memory of architectforum.hu founder Mihály Vargha, who recently died, was organised in cooperation with the Hungarian Association of Architects.
The festival was opened by chairman of the Hungarian Architects Association Ernő Kálmán and head of the International Union of Architects Albert Dubler.
Speakers at Wednesday's conference will explore the topic of ornaments in architecture, citing examples of their use in Hungarian and French Bauhaus buildings.
Among the items on display are the Gömböc, an object created by Gábor Domokos and Péter Várkonyi, that rights itself when in stable equilibrium, much like the trademark Weeble toys, but because of its shape, not because of weight. The Gömböc is thus the first known homogenous object with one stable and one unstable equilibrium point.
Transparencies of ornaments will be projected onto the facade of the Hungarian Institute during the festival as the result of cooperation between graphic artists, architects, glass designers and painters under the aegis of the Sokszem Visual Arts Foundation. The project is supported by the Pani Company, Hungary's National Cultural Fund and Archikon.
