Because of the award, Oláh will play his winning composition, entitled ?Always ? In memoriam Ablakos Lakatos Dezső?, at the 2006 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition and 20th Anniversary Gala Concert in Washington, DC on September 17, said Irén Bácskai, who heads the Hungarian Composers? Association.
The show will also feature performances by some of the greatest jazz artists on the scene today, such as drummer Jack DeJohnette, bassist Ron Carter and pianist Jacky Terrasson.
Since 1987, the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz in Washington has presented the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, the most prestigious jazz competition in the USA. The competition focuses on a different instrument every year and features an outstanding all-star judging panel including Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones. At the centre of this year?s contest are jazz pianists.
