Hungarian Joyce Fans Celebrate New Ulysses Translation

English

Ferenc Takács, who heads the Hungarian James Joyce Society, said passages from the book would be red that mention Szombathely.

Leopold Bloom, the protagonist of Joyce?s masterpiece, was born in Szombathely.

The new Hungarian Ulysses was completed by a team of professional translators under the watch of the literary historian András Kappanyos. The team reworked the previous translation, by Miklós Szentkuthy, published in 1974, and took into account the results of Joyce research since that time, Kappanyos said.

Takács said the new translation hopefully made the notoriously difficult text easier to read.

The reading was preceded by a Joyce conference on Friday.
