English

Zsuzsanna Renner, director of the Hungarian Southeast Asian Research Institute, presented the new evidence at a recent international conference in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

The Hungarian Indochina Society, established by István Zelnik, the art collector and founder of the Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum, started research at the site of Koh Ker in 2009. Zelnik?s Hungarian Southeast Asian Research Institute provided the scientific support for the endeavour.

The institute and society recently participated in an international project to map out the terrain and vegetation of Koh Ker with aerial photographs. The project is expected to make a significant contribution to the further excavation of the site.

The Hungarian Indochina Society has so far documented 73 stone tablets inscribed with Sanskrit and Old Khmer that were found at the site.

Australian researchers are to join the effort under a cooperation agreement signed with the Hungarian Southeast Asian Research Institute.
