Eszter's Inheritance

The festival started in the Fine Arts cinema on Beverly Hills on Wednesday with director Jozsef Sipos' film Eszter's Inheritance, based on Sandor Marai's novel of the same title.

The eight-day festival will feature 14 new films, including Kornel Mundruczo's Delta and Csaba Bollok's Iszka Journey. The latter is also Hungary's nomination at this year's Academy Awards.

In addition to documentaries and short films, the programme will feature such film legends as "Casablanca", "Easy Riders" and "Evita" shot with the involvement of Hungarian film-makers.

A retrospective of films directed by Miklos Jancso is shown in the Los Angeles County Art Museum.

The veteran Hungarian actress Mari Torocsik was scheduled to be the festival's honorary guest but she cancelled earlier this week due to poor health. The 72-year-old actress is currently hospitalised in intensive care.
