After the meeting, Istvan Hiller said the cooperation agreement that expired in 2008 would be expanded, taking into consideration that both countries have joined the European Union since the original agreement had been signed. He said the new agreement should include the launch of joint projects in several cultural fields and the promotion of EU cultural projects in third countries.

Kelemen told reporters that Romania would highly welcome Hungary's support in national heritage projects, which should also be included in the agreement.

The agreement is expected to be signed in the second half of this year.

On Friday afternoon, Hiller attended the opening ceremony of the new premises of the Hungarian Cultural Institute in Bucharest. The lease of an impressive villa built in 1936 has been offered to Hungary after the institute's previous home had been restituted to its original owners.

"I am sure that this building in the centre of Bucharest will be able to offer excellent events and become a real cultural meeting point," Hiller said at the event.

To celebrate the opening, the cultural institute will offer a series of events over the next few days, institute director Zoltan E. Bretter said. A selection of photographs and films by the Mediawave festival in Gyor was shown and a jazz concert with renowned Romanian and Hungarian gutarists was presented to visitors.
