The Hessen Ministry of Higher Education, Research and the Arts picked the 42-year-old Hamar from 90 applicants, basing the decision on a performance of Mozart?s ?The Magic Flute? that he conducted.

Hamar will replace Marc Poillet in the post.

Hamar graduated from the Liszt Academy of Music with a degree in composition in 1994 and a degree in conducting in 1995. The same year, he won second place at a competition for conductors organised by public broadcaster Magyar Televízió. He conducted the Hungarian Radio and Television Youth Symphony Orchestra in 1995-96 and the National Philharmonic Orchestra from 1997. From 1999, he was chief conductor of the Pécs Symphony Orchestra, and between 2000 and 2009 he was the orchestra?s artistic director. He was also a teacher at the Academy of Music between 1996 and 1998.

Hamar received an Artisjus award in 1996 and a Liszt Prize in 2001. In the same year, he took first prize at the conducting competition in Trento. He was decorated with the Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic Knight Cross (civil division) in 2006.
