Madaras was awarded the two-year position of Leverhulme Junior Fellow in Conducting, starting in September.
Madaras was one of 12 candidates who attended the live auditions, selected from an initial 93 applications. Three candidates made it through to the final round conducting the RNCM Symphony Orchestra, following four rounds featuring wind, opera, contemporary and chamber orchestra repertoire. Gergely will receive tuition from Sir Mark Elder, Clark Rundell, Mark Shanahan and visiting conductors, as well as conduct the RNCM Symphony and Chamber Orchestra and benefit from the RNCM's strong links with the Hallé, BBC Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Manchester Camerata.
Madaras was born in Budapest in 1984 and studied the flute, violin and composition before graduating in flute from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in 2009. In 2002 he founded the Budapest Youth Symphony Orchestra and was music director until 2005; and in 2004 he founded the IKZE Festival (Contemporary Music Festival of Young Composers) with Noemi Györi. He has conducted orchestras across Europe and in America, and in 2008 he was invited by the Wien Modern Festival to conduct the Austrian premi?re of Stop by Karlheinz Stockhausen.
