Brickner was the first Hungarian to take the top prize at the competition in its 50-year history. The runner-up was France's Isabelle Druet and the third prize went to Bernadetta Grabias from Poland.
Brickner graduated from the Liszt Music Academy in Budapest and also studied in Augsburg, Germany. During the competition, which started at the beginning of the week, he performed works by Meyerbeer, Britten, Mahler, Verdi and Tchaikovsky.
Brickner beat 82 contestants for the top prize, among them two Hungarians: the mezzo-soprano Dóra Érsek and the soprano Julianna Kriszta Kinga.
