After two years of preparations, China was the guest of honour at Budapest's International Book Festival in April. Deputy director of the Chinese press authority GAPP Wu Shulin, who represented China at the event, invited Hungarian publishers to Beijing for this year's festival.
Hungary could become the guest of honour at the Book Festival of Beijing in 2010, but its chances are better for 2011, Schneider said. The guest of honour gets a 1,000-squre-metre stand and a number of other special opportunities to promote its books, she added.
Hungary must lobby for a long time if it is to be made the guest of honour.
Hungarian classics enjoy a wide popularity on the Chinese book market, but the country's contemporary literature is relatively unknown.
